SHERLOCK HOLMES

BIOGRAPHY OF SHERLOCK HOLMES

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective created by Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London detective, Holmes is famous for his astute logical reasoning, his ability to take almost any disguise, and his forensic science skills to solve difficult cases.

Holmes, who first appeared in publication in 1887, was featured in four novels and 56 short stories. The first story:

A Study in Scarlet: appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887.

The Sign of the Four: in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two novels published in serial form appeared between then and 1927. The stories cover a period from around 1880 up to 1907, with a final case in 1914.

All but four stories are narrated by Holmes's friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson; two are narrated by Holmes himself ("The Blanched Soldier" and "The Lion's Mane") and two others are written in the third person ("The Mazarin Stone" and "His Last Bow"). In two stories ("The Musgrave Ritual" and "The Gloria Scott"), Holmes tells Watson the main story from his memories, while Watson becomes the narrator of the frame story. The first and fourth novels, A Study in Scarlet and The Valley of Fear, each include a long interval of omniscient narration recounting events unknown both to Holmes and to Watson.

Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He loved literature as a child. By age 14, he had learned French so that he could read Jules Verne in the original!
He studied medicine at Edinburgh University. One of his professors, Dr Joseph Bell, was excellent at observation and deduction. He inspired the creation of Sherlock Holmes.
In the 1880s, Conan Doyle worked as an eye specialist in the south of England. He didn't have many patients, so he began writing stories..and created Sherlock Holmes!

"Elementary, my dear Watson"
This is one of the most famous quotes in the English language. Holmes says this to Watson when he explains deductions he was made. But the expressions is not in the books. It was first used in the 1929 film, the Return of Sherlock Holmes.

The Sherlock Holmes dead
In 1893, Conan Doyle Killed of Holmes in The Final Problem. But the public were so angry that eight years later, Conan Doyle brought him black!

Palacio Ducale

The Palacio Ducale is situated in San Marco square, Italy. It was built between the centuries X and XI, we don’t know who designed it. The palace is made of white marble. The palace was the residence of the Dux, an important family of the govern and of the court of justice and prison. From the outside, we can see, on the first floor, an arches gallery, and big windows on the second floor. Inside there’s a renaissance style court. I’ve visited the palace once now, and the things which I like the best are the thirty six arches, and the big windows.

Giving advice

If I were you, I would be worried. Maybe your friend is in a big trouble.
I think that you should speak with your friend about this, maybe it’s all a mistake, and tell her that you’re worried.
Or maybe you should speak to Steve, because her friend is acting strangely. Ask him about your friend missing school, and that she’s looking for the money.

My opinion about the future

I’m not sure about myself, because I don’t know exactly what I want in the future, but I can imagine me working in my own business, or dancing in a performing arts in Barcelona… That’s what I imagine that I would like, but I’m not sure.

I think there’s not an ideal age to choose a profession, because the people are different and maybe one person (since he is a child) wants to be an an artist, and another, changes his opinion one month before going University. It depends of the personality of the person.

In my country, the teenager exam is ‘Selectivitat’ . You do it when you finish the high school.

I think the parents should give advice about careers without pressure.

If the adults pressurize their children, then, the children can’t think clearly, and they probably will choose wrongly his career.

The future ( a composition )

In my opinion our lives will be easier and healthier in the future. We won’t create any pollution, and scientists will create a type of aspirin with all the nutrients that we need. We might have more time for entertainment.
I think it’s important we colonise space, because in the future we will be more people than now, and for that reason, we will need more water and food. And we could meet this food in the other planets.
I feel optimistic about the future. I believe that people will be able to be responsible about the pollution in the earth.

International students in London

With its long tradition of musical theatre, London was the natural place for Bishat to come and study. In the third and final year degree at dramatic arts school, she is auditioning for roles and planes to stay.

When she first arrived in the UK, Bishat was surprised at how hospitable everyone was. "It was really different. Everyone's really friendly and talks to you and says 'hi'. It was so weird. When people ask me 'Are you OK?' I stop to answer, but they just being friendly." It helps that her English is googd. " I learnt at school and from watching television. And they tech us accents at school, too".

She found the Tube, London's underground train system, difficult to get used to, through. She was also alarmed at the pace of life. " The tempo is fast, everyone is always on the go. You need to be a lot feistier here -and I am- or the people will just walk past you."

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Bishat is delighted at the opportunities studding in London has given her, too. " They do have some good colleges in Sweden, but the tradition of musical theater isn't as strong as is here. You get directors and composers walking through these doors, you get firsthand information and people know us and might employ us."

An email

From:Blanca
To:Alex
Subject: Hi from Paris

Hi Alex,

I’m writing this email from Paris. The weather Is really cold at the moment but I really like it here because the city is very beautiful, and the people who live here is friendly and extroverted. We are visiting the most interesting places and museums of the city.

We’ve just arrived here in Paris, we trabelled by AVE. We stayed five hours in the train, to get to in the middle of the city! But this is the only bad experience that we had.

These days, we’re staying in the Banke Hotel. It's in the same street as La Fayette. Tomorrow we are going to visit the Versailles palace . We're arrive getting here by train.

A survivor's story

One morning in last summer I was studying with my brother on our speed boat. We were in a little beach away from Portbou, when the weather became stormy. I was alone with my brother in the cabin, watching the sea.

Suddenly, we saw a massive wave. It was very frightening. When the wave hit us there was a lot of noise. It was terrible and the next moment there was panic. We were shouting and all things were falling and breaking everywhere.

Afterwards I was OK, but my brother was injured. It was a terrible experience. When we arrive at the harbor 15 minits later, we felt very lucky to be alive.
